Quick Facts
- Menorca was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1993. The entire island is an environmentally protected zone.
- Menorca, located 225 km southeast of Barcelona, is the second largest of the Balearic Islands. The others are Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
- The island boasts 220 kms of coastline and it has more beaches than all of the other Balearic islands taken together.
- There is just one main road that runs from the airport (Mahon, in the east, is also known as Mao) to Ciutadella, in the west (45kms away).
- The distance from east to west is 53km and from north to south 23 kms.
- Menorca has a population in total of around 75,000 people.
- The main touristic season runs from April to October.
- In winter, it goes all wonderfully quiet and is a perfect relaxing getaway even off-season.
- The average maximum daily temperature is 20 degrees C, rising to 28 degrees C in July.
- In January, the temperature goes down to an average of 14 degrees C.
It has the largest concentration of pre-historic sites (over 1000) in the world. Many of these are dating from the Talaiotic period (2000 – 123 bc) and many of the burial caves and settlements are still actually intact, with talaiots and taulas (stonehenge-like t-shaped tables topped by a mammoth rock).
Rocks - there are reportedly 15,000 kms of drystone wall here - are an exceedingly obvious feature of the island.
There are numerous rock quarries that have been mined for centuries, some of which have been transformed. One of these quarries, near Ciutadella, is Lithica.
Lithica has been turned into a cultural center where, during summer months concerts are held and films are shown, under the stars, at the bottom of a vast pit, with sheer vertical 50 meter high sides.
There is even an antique rock quarry carved out from the edge of the sea in Ciutadella, perfect for fishing off, or, for just gazing at the yachts or at the amazing pink sunsets, with the mountains of Mallorca on the horizon.
